Moisture induced problems continue to plague the construction industry. Concrete slabs contain capillaries that attract moisture from the soil. The adverse effects may result in flooring failures, mold and mildew growth and poor IAQ (indoor air quality). Moisture, in vapor form, is transferred through a slab much faster than moisture in liquid form. Water vapor, driven by vapor pressure, will condense at the dew point to the underside of flooring materials. The repairs that follow can be expensive and may result in litigation. Viper® VaporCheck® will greatly reduce this problem by controlling the initial water vapor migration. As a result, the concrete slab will have a stronger cure, the finished floor will last longer and the building’s interior will contain cleaner air to breathe. It is important to note that just because an object is waterproof it is not necessarily vaporproof. However, if an object is vaporproof it is also waterproof.

A common problem with generic membranes is that they are often punctured before and during the concrete pour. If a vapor barrier becomes punctured, moisture will be released through the holes, causing water vapor to make its way into the concrete. The following can cause punctures in a vapor barrier: form work, rebar, rebar chairs, stakes, etc.

Floor Failure

The outstanding strength characteristics of Viper® make this a problem of the past. Viper® is a triple ply, extrusion coated, virgin polyethylene membrane manufactured using woven, high-density fibers yielding the highest strength-to-weight ratio, tensile strength, tear resistance, bursting strength, puncture resistance and perm rating of any product of its kind. Viper® VaporCheck® comes in three mil thicknesses: 6.5, 10 and 16 mil. Each mil thickness exceeds ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) E 1745 “Class A” requirements. ASTM 1745 is the standard specification for plastic water vapor retarders. These specifications cover flexible preformed sheet membrane materials to be used as a vapor barrier in contact with soil or granular fill under concrete slabs.

Below is a table illustrating the characteristics of Viper® 6.5, 10 and 16 mil. The table shows the performance of Viper® VaporCheck® in comparison to the ASTM E 1745 standard. Viper® receives straight A’s, making it the “Head of the Class.”

*Insulation Solutions Inc. (ISI) has done additional testing, beyond the ASTM standards, to highlight the strength and durability of Viper® VaporCheck® under slab vapor barrier.  The additional tests include:  Tear Strength (ASTM D 751 Tongue:  Standard Test Methods for Coated Fabrics), Bursting Strength (ASTM D 751 Mullen:  Standard Test Methods for Coated Fabrics), and Puncture Resistance (ASTM D 5602:  Standard Test Method for Static Puncture Resistance of Roofing Membrane Specimens). ISI did these additional tests to emphasize the importance of strength and durability when using an under slab vapor retarder.
